Are you considering adoption and wondering how an open adoption works? Unlike other adoption plans, where all or some communication is done through a third party, open adoption allows the most open communication.
Is Open Adoption for You?
Though no adoption plan is easy emotionally, an open adoption allows for the most flexibility and access to your child and your relationship with the adoptive family of your choosing. It allows the birth mother and the adoptive family to open communication with one another.
With both parties, identifying information, including full names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. will be exchanged.
Other Adoption Options
If open adoption isn’t the right fit for your unique situation, you have two other adoption options.
In addition to open adoption, here are the two other adoption plans to choose from:
- Semi-open adoption: The woman has contact with the adoptive family, but all communication is carried out via a third party, like an adoption agency or attorney.
- Closed adoption: The most private plan, a closed adoption ensures that all identifying records are sealed. The woman remains anonymous, with no contact between her and the adoptive family.
The decision is completely up to you. Some women need more privacy in their adoption process due to life circumstances, and that’s ok.
