If you are over 12 weeks pregnant, you are considered in your second trimester of pregnancy. What are your pregnancy options? You have three: surgical abortion, adoption, and parenting.

At Parke Vermillion Community Pregnancy Center, we’re here to help you feel informed about all three options. Get the facts to make an informed decision for your future.

Second-Trimester Pregnancy Options

1. Surgical Abortion

Medical abortion is only recommended by the FDA for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Otherwise, surgical abortion is recommended. A common second-trimester surgical abortion procedure is called a dilation and curettage, commonly called a D&C abortion. This procedure involves the provider removing any contents of the uterus.

A dilation and evacuation abortion procedure is typically done for later pregnancies. All surgical abortion procedures involve dilating (opening) the cervix to allow room for surgical instruments into the uterus to remove the pregnancy.

2. Parenting

Your third option is parenting. Women often choose this option even when the timing doesn’t feel right, or they have many questions. It’s common not to know what’s next or have concerns about how to care for a child. Support is available.

If you’re trying to figure out if parenting is for you, It’s important to be honest with yourself and your questions. Discuss your questions with us at Parke Vermillion Community Pregnancy Center for clarity.

3. Adoption

Adoption is an option if you know you don’t want to go through with an abortion but don’t feel quite ready to parent. Birth mothers have much more of a say in the process these days. You should not have to pay any of the costs associated with the adoption.

You can choose different types of adoptions based on the relationship you desire with your child (if any). Adoption plans include open, closed, or semi-open adoption. A licensed adoption agent can help walk you through your options to choose your best plan.
